I've just merged Wei Lin's 'sub-modelling' item (and votes) into this item.

This is an idea that could develop in several directions: for detailed analysis of part of the structure, for team working, sub-structuring for efficient analysis, ...

Note that 'GSA sub-structuring' [http://oasys.uservoice.com/forums/243571-structural-feedback-big-ideas/suggestions/5593906-gsa-sub-structuring] already exists as an idea.

I’ve moved this form the ‘REGIONAL ideas’ forum (which is mostly for new codes of practice) to teh ‘SMALL ideas forum’.

I think this means extending the new model generator, that is currently only accessible from the new model wizard, and making the new model generator generally accessible.

In GSA the polyline is implicitly closed if the context requires a polygon, - hence the closing grey line in the graphic representation of the polyline. In GSA 9 the polyline becomes 3D and there is no need to draw it on a grid plane; it can be drawn directly on the picture plane, making it less clunky as a selection tool.

The behaviour of the existing polygon select option depends on the direction in which the polygon is drawn: clockwise - any part; anti-clockwise - all

Darren: there's a (little known) polygon select option in the current version of GSA: select a polyline then switch to, say, element select; elements within the closed polyline in the current orientation are selected. I agree that this could be more intuitive, but what's there now popped out with little effort.

It would be quite confusing if this kind of automatic updating were applied only to the Combination Cases table. Shouldn't nodes be renumbered if a node record is deleted (as opposed to blanked)? Etc. So I think the suggestion is that all tables should automatically update references. Clearly this requires more effort to implement so I've moved this item to the 'BIG ideas' forum.

An alternative option is to provide a Renumber Combinations option in the Manage Data dialog.

We're doing quite a bit of work on the Section Wizard, including offering the option to resize the window. This should help, though I can see that an option to identify bar positions more clearly would also be useful.

Sounds useful. I'm just trying to think whether this can somehow be woven into the 'GSA object builder' item in 'Structural feedback – BIG ideas'.

The CAD import option allows various CAD entities to be imported as polylines. Are you after something different to that?

Note that joints (and other constraints) act in node constraint axis directions, which default to global but can be specified as a user defined axis set.

    Nested lists. OK.

It would be easy enough to associate a colour with a list in the same way as you can associate a colour with a property. But an entity can exist in more than one list so 'colour by list' would have to colour the entity the colour of, say, the first list that the entity appears in.

Another option might be to introduce the concept of a 'current list(s)' and an option to colour the current list(s).

The closest thing we have to this is the 'Edit | Select Out of Range' which selects all entities for which the currently contoured data is outside the contour range.

How would the user module be displayed graphically? Contouring works with numeric values. Labelling is a possibility, though it doesn't fit too well.

The 'governing utilisation' contour option that we implemented recently is contoured textual data achieved by assigning labels to the contours in the legend and contouring 'graded by value'. That method would only work for user modules with less than, say, 20 distinct labels.

So options for top-left, top-right, bottom-left, bottom-right? Or to anywhere?

Good idea. There's already the 'View settings painter' tool, which can be used to paste all graphic settings from one view to another. Perhaps this idea could be satisfied by extending the painter technology to allow Graphic Views to be 'related' and allowing for 'pinned' graphic settings, including orientation, to be shared amongst related views.

To assign a colour to a list of elements is simple enough. ('Graphics | Modify Colour of Selection') So I think you want colours to be directly associated with lists. Then, as you say, we need to consider hierarchy (though I don't quite get your proposed solution). Perhaps when 'colour by list' is on then only selected lists are coloured, with elements included in more than one selected list being coloured, say, magenta. A new modeless control for selecting lists would be needed.

I think you want to specify the direction of view in terms of angles to X, Y and Z as an alternative to specifying longitude and latitude. Is that so as to align the view with the view produced by another program?

The last version installed is the registered version of GSA. The registered version is the version that is run when you open (double-click) a GWB or GWA file. (It's also the registered version that is run if GSA is opened via the GSA COM API using the less recommended 'late binding' approach.) But shortcuts will always point to the version of GSA for which they were created. I don't think having a version number in the EXE name will help identify which version of GSA is to be run when a GSA file is double-clicked. I suppose there could be a utility to 'make this version the registered version', but I suspect you would need admin rights to run it, so you may as well reinstall the version that you want to be the registered version.

If the starting point were a beam element model representing the cross section of the web and flanges then the 'Sculpt | Extrude Selection' command could be used to create the 2D element model. But I think you want the starting point to be a single beam element and section property.
