Structural feedback – BIG ideas

This feedback forum is for your magnificent ideas for Oasys Structural software: major new features, significant changes to existing functionality, – suggestions that will impact on our development plan. These will be considered and prioritized in consultation with the Regional Panel.

  1. Update Embodied Carbon Figures in GSA - Tie into Arup Carbon Database (V db)

The GSA sustainability impact contours can fill a (crucial) gap on a project between initial sizing & production of BIM models when we can then easily use more comprehensive tools such as Arup Carbon, however they are currently out-of-date. Article below sets out Arup Structure's overall strategy on embodied carbon tools.
    https://www.ribaj.com/products/technology-tools-to-help-cut-embodied-carbon-conor-hayes-arup

The idea that our Oasys products do (or more accurately did) ‘display environmental impacts, such as embodied carbon, in a similar manner to traditional structural parameters such as axial stress or deflections’ is a really powerful narrative of how embodied carbon can be part of the natural design…

  2. GSA results management

    1) Overhaul GSA results management so as to
    - speed up the opening of large models
    - speed up the saving of large models, including the saving of backups
    - speed up results access
    - store post-processed results
    2) Provide results management console, for user control.
    3) offer batch calc of post-processed results

  4. User Manual Improvements

    • Currently too brief

    • Add more graphical explanation

    • Arrange such that help can be displayed alongside GSA window instead of always on top

  5. Clear Vision Needed for our Structural Software

At the moment there appears to be a largely scattered approach, with feedback, requests, surveys, and "large project" requirements driving the development of features and functionality. The result of this is a scattered feature set and poor integration with the common structural design workflows that we use on daily basis. We are all filling in the gaps with workarounds, spreadsheets, scripts, and use of other software. As a firm we need to have a clear vision for our structural software suite.

According to the GSA change log, the last major release (v8.0) was back in 2002 (http://oasys.intranet.arup.com/gsa/GsaChangeLog_8.htm) -…

  6. GSA composite design

Implement layer in GSA for definition of composite floor offering automatic and manual beam width definition.
Design carried out by API link with Compos.

    Depends on 'Generalise section object'.

  7. GSA API enhancements phase 2 (.NET)

    • Extend the COM interface to offer faster access to frequently used objects.

    • Simplify and extend the interface to post-processed results.
Do this by the implementation of a .NET interface to GSA.
Also provide .NET interfaces to AdSec, ADC and Compos.

Depends on refactoring of program code.

  9. Integration/Connection with Ideas Statica Steel Connection Software

Develop a workflow between GSA and Ideas Statica Steel Connection Software. At the very least this will allow some time savings in getting the model forces out from GSA into a steel connection program, this will also allow more efficient designs through better feedback of how local joints are performing and how they then need to be modelled in the overall structural model.

  12. GSA RC member design - phase 2

    • Extend 'bar arrangement' to accommodate full ADC definition

    • Design rationalisation:

      • member grouping

      • select bar arrangement for envelope of group

    • Add graphical representation of bar arrangement

    • Provide links to AdSec and ADC

    • replacemenet for HK-BEAM (i.e. include batch processing)

  15. Chart views have "case" drop down selector (and footfall charts have node selection drop down)

Chart views could be made smarter by having drop down menus to select the case to plot, e.g. the modal analysis or footfall case - like the graphic view has. For footfall results it would be also good to have excitation and excitation node selection. This would remove the need to go through the toolbar menu every time the same chart needs to be plotted, for a different case or node selection.

I’ve changed this to a ‘BIG idea’ as it would have a big impact on how chart views are handled. Currently the chart view is pretty dumb, simply displaying data that is passed to it and allowing some formatting adjustments.

Easier selection of plotted results in GSA 9
