Structural feedback – BIG ideas

This feedback forum is for your magnificent ideas for Oasys Structural software: major new features, significant changes to existing functionality, – suggestions that will impact on our development plan. These will be considered and prioritized in consultation with the Regional Panel.

You have 20 votes to distribute as you wish. You can reallocate votes at any time. Votes are released back into your pool when an item is completed (or declined).

How can we improve Oasys Structural software in a BIG way?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  6. Clear Vision Needed for our Structural Software

    At the moment there appears to be a largely scattered approach, with feedback, requests, surveys, and "large project" requirements driving the development of features and functionality. The result of this is a scattered feature set and poor integration with the common structural design workflows that we use on daily basis. We are all filling in the gaps with workarounds, spreadsheets, scripts, and use of other software. As a firm we need to have a clear vision for our structural software suite.

    According to the GSA change log, the last major release (v8.0) was back in 2002 (http://oasys.intranet.arup.com/gsa/GsaChangeLog_8.htm) -…

  7. Make the FE meshing easier

    It seems the steps required to produce an FE mesh is more complicated then it should be (compared to other programs such as Midas and Lusas etc.). The user should be able to select a number of elements and nodes and within a few click or two pull up a dialog box, enter the mesh size etc. and then generate the mesh.

  8. GSA steel design enhancements

    1) Auto-constraints
    * derive from connectivity to:
    * floor
    * connections
    * secondaries
    2) Auto-selection of section
    * section range
    * member grouping
    * minimum weight / minimum depth per group
    * option to optimise to specified utilisation factor
    * option to perform final analysis and re-do section checks followed by final deflection check
    3) Review output
    * Output at critical position, not at every position
    * Output steel design calculations (in a verbose or brief format) for envelopes
    4) Provide more visual representation of member restraints, and include this in the manual
    5) Improve clarity of check member-element relationships…

  10. Generalise section objects

    Extend scope of standard sections such that a section can be shared between GSA, AdSec, ADC and Compos.
    To facilitate:
    *• transfer of data between programs without data loss or complex manipulations
    * cracked section analysis
    * tapered sections
    GSA cold-formed section properties
    * Add cold-formed purlins/girts to section database
    * Accommodate Cee and Zed section shapes
    GSA fabricated sections
    * Incorporate advanced section property calcs.
    * Implement in steel design (in a general, code independent, way??)
    GSA section insertion points
    * Section offset/insertion point options (top right, top center, top left, middle right, centroid, middle left, bottom right, bottom…

  13. GSA API enhancements phase 2 (.NET)

    * Extend the COM interface to offer faster access to frequently used objects.
    * Simplify and extend the interface to post-processed results.
    Do this by the implementation of a .NET interface to GSA.
    Also provide .NET interfaces to AdSec, ADC and Compos.

    Depends on refactoring of program code.

  16. improve revit link

    The amount of processing needed on a GSA model of a slab and wall structure once it has been exported from Revit means that the models quickly diverge. The goal should be to maintain a single (BIM) model so that any changes in the geometry (Revit) model can be quickly exported to create a usable GSA model.

    Detailed notes from a GSA User (with no Revit experience) on the issues from a recent complex 3D model will be attached as a comment on this idea.

  17. GSA RC member design - phase 2

    * Extend 'bar arrangement' to accommodate full ADC definition
    * Design rationalisation:
    * member grouping
    * select bar arrangement for envelope of group
    * Add graphical representation of bar arrangement
    * Provide links to AdSec and ADC
    - replacemenet for HK-BEAM (i.e. include batch processing)

  20. Chart views have "case" drop down selector (and footfall charts have node selection drop down)

    Chart views could be made smarter by having drop down menus to select the case to plot, e.g. the modal analysis or footfall case - like the graphic view has. For footfall results it would be also good to have excitation and excitation node selection. This would remove the need to go through the toolbar menu every time the same chart needs to be plotted, for a different case or node selection.

    I’ve changed this to a ‘BIG idea’ as it would have a big impact on how chart views are handled. Currently the chart view is pretty dumb, simply displaying data that is passed to it and allowing some formatting adjustments.

    Easier selection of plotted results in GSA 9
